Newbury College Academy Trust has a governing board responsible that acts as Highwood Copseā€™s legally accountable body. It is accountable for the individual school to the local authority and has a strategic oversight role.

The task of the governing board is to lead the school strategically, focusing on the three core functions:

  • Ensuring clarity of the vision, ethos and strategic direction.
  • Holding the executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the school(s) and its pupils and the effective and efficient performance management of staff.
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school(s) and making sure that its money is well spent.

The board may delegate functions to individual governors, the Headteacher/Head of School (in certain circumstances) and committees of the board, but it remains accountable and is responsible for all decisions made. It is responsible for the general control and management of the administration of the school with the headteacher operating within the autonomy, powers and functions delegated to them by the board.
