You will learn the skills and knowledge necessary to plan, deliver and evaluate safe and effective fitness instruction sessions via the context of gym-based exercise. Students successfully completing this qualification will be able to gain access to the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) at level 2.

The objectives of this course are to:

Provide you with the skills and knowledge necessary to plan, deliver and evaluate safe and effective fitness instruction sessions via the context of gym work Enhance the status of employees within the fitness industry Promote good practice in fitness instructing by working to a common standard which is nationally recognised.

The subjects you will study include: Anatomy and physiology for exercise Know how to support clients who take part in exercise and physical activity Health, safety and welfare in a fitness environment Principles of exercise, fitness and health Planning gym-based exercise Instructing gym-based exercise

Entry Requirements

There are no formal qualifications required although a good understanding of Maths and English would be beneficial.


Students should have an interest in health and fitness and be able to demonstrate the use of gym equipment. Students should also have a range of contacts that would be willing to be assessed and go through exercise sessions.


Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Gym-Based Exercise)


Students will be expected to successfully achieve all the units to gain the full qualification. Each unit will consist of a range of practical and theory assessments and you will be observed, tested and will need to produce researched assignments. Students will need to be able to supply their own clientele to act as models for any practical assessment work

Home Study

Students will be expected to complete homework, research and assignments outside of class contact time. It is anticipated this would be between 3 and 6 hours per week

Work Placement


Students may want to progress on to a range of fitness and exercise classes, personal trainer programmes, coaching courses or HNC/D sports programmes

Fees and Additional Costs

If you are over 18 there will be a registration fee of £66.00 if you have not previously registered with the exam board. Students will need to pay for awarding body registration fees, purchase or have suitable exercise clothing and footwear and any text books recommended by the tutor. Students who wish to apply for REP's membership will also need to pay their membership fees
