This course is aimed at complete beginners with no previous knowledge of Spanish and covers A1 of the Common European Framework of References for Languages. Students will be able to communicate with sympathetic native speakers using basic phrases in a variety of everyday situations.

Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and rules regarding social distancing Term 1 of this course will be taught via blended learning. The course will include both online and face to face teaching sessions. Terms 2 and 3 will be taught remotely via Microsoft Teams. All sessions will be scheduled at the times indicated below.

*The course tutor will provide live teaching sessions online using Microsoft Teams.

  • Selected sessions will be available for a small number of students on a rota basis at the college. All face to face sessions will also be streamed online to ensure all learners can fully participate in every session. Your course tutor will arrange with you a rota for coming into the college (Term 1 only).

  • If you are not attending in person, you will participate in the session from home via Microsoft Teams (Term 1 only).

  • Learners who are unable to attend face to face sessions can still enrol onto the course and attend all sessions online.

*Terms 2 and 3 will be taught remotely via Teams.

Learners will also be able to access a wide range of College services including Moodle, Office 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, One Drive) and Microsoft Teams to support online learning. Induction sessions will be held prior to the start of the course, to allow learners to familiarise themselves with the online learning platforms.

This course is aimed at any student wishing to learn Spanish in a fun and relaxed environment.

  • Personal
  • Home and family information
  • Asking for directions in towns
  • Shopping
  • Eating out and booking accommodation.

Grammar structures at a basic level will be taught, focusing on the present tense. The main language skills to be developed are speaking, listening, reading and writing. Understanding written Spanish is based on practical items such as notices, leaflets and signs.

By the end of the course students have the ability and confidence to cope with everyday situations such as ordering a meal, booking a hotel room and exchanging basic personal information, by concentrating on simple sentences, short questions and responses and grammatical structures. Much use will be made of role play in small groups.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Students will learn how to communicate in everyday situations using the four language skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Students should be aware this is a three term course and they will be expected to complete all three terms of Beginners before moving up to Intermediate the following September.

*PLEASE NOTE - The running of this course is subject to receiving sufficient enrolment numbers. Newbury College reserve the right to close, cancel or postpone a course if it has not received the minimum required enrolment number by the scheduled start date. In the case of cancellation, enrolled students will be notified approximately one week before the start date.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for the first term of the course, although students should have a good level of basic literacy.


No previous knowledge required for term one. Term two is a continuation of term one so basic knowledge is required. Term three is a continuation of term two so equivalent knowledge is required. Students are welcome to begin at the start of term two and three as long as they have equivalent experience.


This course contains a short, accredited qualification, which consists of planning and carrying out several different French projects using a range of taught skills. Students keep a portfolio of work which will be assessed internally by Newbury College and externally via the awarding body. Upon successful completion of the qualification, students are awarded the Level 1 Award in Learning, Employability and Progression for languages.


Progress on this course will be tested through answering handouts, quizzes/informal tests, observation, peer and lecturer feedback, marked written work and presentation.

Home Study

Homework (reading) is essential and students will benefit from undertaking home study of up to one hour per week.

Work Placement

Students do not need to be in relevant work to undertake this course.


After completing all three terms of Spanish for Beginners, students can progress onto the Spanish Intermediate course at Newbury College.

Fees and Additional Costs

Students will need to buy a course book and this will be discussed at the first class.
