This programme is for students who wish to pursue or advance their career in healthcare practice or other related fields. Those who are working, or wish to work and develop their skills as professional, self-reflecting individual able to meet the demands of employers in the healthcare sector and adapt to a constantly changing world.

This programme has a number of different subject specialisms that result in different award titles. The title of the award made will depend on the modules completed. The titles of the awards available are HNCs Healthcare Practice (Integrated Health and Social Care), Healthcare Practice (Healthcare Management) and Healthcare Practice (Public Health and Health Promotion). In addition there are Nursing awards (Nursing and Healthcare Support).

HNC Units in the programme include:

Law, Policy and Ethical Practice in Health and Social Care

Demonstrating Professional Principles and Values in Health and Social Care Practice

Supporting the Individual Journey through Integrated Health and Social Care

Fundamentals of Evidence-based Practice

Plus a selection of optional units dependent upon the subject pathway.

Entry Requirements

English and Maths at Grade 4 (C Grade) or above. UCAS Points 68

Mature students are considered for this qualification. Reading, Writing and Maths skills will be assessed


Whilst it is not essential that you are employed in this sector as work experience may be offered, it is useful to understand some of the key concepts, values and principles that apply.


Pearson Higher National Certificate in Healthcare Practice


Assessment takes place at the end of each unit and is in the form of reports, presentations, essays, case studies and logs/journals as appropriate.

Home Study

The course will require a further 10-15 hours of additional reading and assignment work outside of lesson time.

Work Placement

There is a requirement of at least 225 hours of work experience/placement in health and/or social care settings and a Professional Learning and Development portfolio, including reflective accounts, to be completed. A satisfactory DBS (Data Barring Scheme) check will be required to secure these placements.


Following completion of this course you may choose to complete the Higher National Diploma and then on to a University programme.

Fees and Additional Costs

If you are over 18 there will be a registration fee of £200.00 if you have not previously registered with the exam board. Funding is available through Student Finance England for the cost of the course, but a one off payment for registration/certification of 200 pounds.
