Essential Skills (English and Maths)

This course is a foundation course aimed at non-native speakers with very little or no English. By the end of the course students are able to use survival English, and have a basic conversation at home, in the workplace and in the community.

Students on this course will be able to say the alphabet, numbers 1-100, introduce themselves and others, ask and answer where they are from, talk about people and family, ask for food and drink in a cafe, talk/write about a day in their lives and say what they can and cannot do. They will also learn language to help them at the doctors and in shops. They will be able to complete forms, read basic texts and write basic sentences.

Entry Requirements

No experience/qualifications required.




They will receive a Newbury College certificate of attendance.


Assessments are on-going through observation, role play and class tests. These are held regularly to assess that the learner is on track.

Home Study

One to two hours of homework.

Work Placement



Progression is to Entry 1 FENNS via an end of year test.
