This qualification is designed for new entrants to the industry, providing them with the basic skills and experience they need, or for those who have successfully achieved the Level 1 course.

The certificate will suit students who want to learn the basics of electro-technical principles and practice. It allows students to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in the electro-technology sector. This is a qualification that tests both practical and knowledge-based skills in a realistic working environment.

The qualification covers topics which include:

  • Health and safety in building engineering
  • Principles of electrical science
  • Electrical installations technology
  • Installation of wiring systems technology.

Upon successful completion, students will be at an improver/electrician's mate level. Attendance of 100% is necessary in order to complete the course.

Entry Requirements

Students need four GCSE passes at grade 2 or above, preferably including Maths and English, or a vocational qualification at pass or above, and Functional Skills Maths and English preferably at Entry Level 3.

Students who have not yet achieved grade 4 in GCSE Maths and English, will study Functional Skills or GCSE Maths and English as part of their course.


Ideally students would have completed a Level 1 electrical course or have undertaken a technical subject at school. Use of basic tools and some hand skills would be useful.

The course is continuously assessed by both practical and written assignments and tests.

Home Study

Students are expected to carry out some self study, typically six hours per week, and are expected to complete any work that has not been completed during lesson times.

Work Placement

There is an element of work experience within this qualification. The expectation is that students will fulfil a work placement if suitable.


Students can progress to a Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installations or an apprenticeship.

Fees and Additional Costs

If you are over 18 there will be a registration fee of £140.00 if you have not previously registered with the exam board. Additional costs may be required for the industry specific text books. Details will be given at interview. Students are required to purchase safety boots to be worn during workshop based lessons.
