Overview

This professional qualification is suitable for those working in the engineering industry who are looking to develop their mechanical engineering skills. It is a recognised qualification in engineering that offers career progression for those already in employment or as a platform for continued studies at degree level. The qualification can be studied either on a full-time basis one day a week over one year or on a part-time basis one day a week over two years (with an employer's prior agreement).

BTEC Higher National Diplomas provide a nationally-recognised qualification The qualification is undertaken on a day-release basis over one year and is essentially a follow on from the HNC. The qualification provides a thorough grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required by the sector with national recognition by employers. It is the equivalent to the first year of a degree programme. The core units are:

Unit 34: Research Project Unit 35: Professional Engineering Management (Pearson-set) Unit 36: Advanced Mechanical Principles Unit 37: Virtual Engineering Unit 39: Further Mathematics.

The Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering provides for in-depth study of key aspects of mechanical engineering and equips learners for progression within their chosen profession or for further study. Students will be assessed via vocationally relevant assignments and, in addition to classroom teaching, will be expected to develop skills in research and self-directed study.

Entry Requirements

Students must have completed an HNC in an engineering discipline. Depending on existing qualifications, learners may be required to complete additional top-up units to ensure they meet Pearson BTEC requirements

Assessment

Students are assessed continually throughout the course, normally via written assignments.

Home Study

An additional four hours a week is required for work outside of class.

Work Placement

The course is aimed at those already in employment in the mechanical industry, but such employment is not an essential requirement to benefit from the course. The course does not involve work placement.

Progression

Upon completion of the course, students have the opportunity to progress to the Engineering Degree or Degree Apprenticeship.

Fees and Additional Costs

If you are over 18 there will be a registration fee of £215.00 if you have not previously registered with the exam board. In addition to the tuition fees, an awarding body registration fee of approx.. pound;265.00 (set by the awarding body) is payable. At times, students are offered the opportunity to visit exhibitions and shows, which may require additional entrance fees and coach costs.

Additional Information

The course is delivered on a day-release basis over one or two years. For tuition fee purposes, this course is classed as full-time if completed in one year, and part-time if completed over two years.
