This is a professional qualification for those in or wishing to work in mechanical engineering. The course leads to a recognised qualification in engineering that offers career progression for those already in employment or as a platform for continued studies at degree level. The qualification is studied part-time, one day a week over two years. The course is delivered through a blended learning approach, meaning teaching and learning will occur both on site in classrooms and remotely via a virtual learning environment.

    BTEC Higher National Certificate provide a nationally recognised qualification. The qualification is undertaken on a day release basis over two years. The qualification provides a thorough grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required by the sector with national recognition by employers. The units are:

    Year 1

    • Unit 2 Engineering Maths
    • Unit 3 Engineering Science
    • Unit 8 Mechanical Principles
    • Unit 23 Computer aided design/Computer aided manufacture

    Year 2

    • Unit 1 Engineering Design
    • Unit 4 Managing a Professional Engineering Project (Pearson-set)
    • Unit 12 Engineering Management
    • Unit 13 Thermodynamics

    Smaller classes mean greater support and as part of Newbury College, we have over 70 years of experience in delivering innovative engineering programmes, working with key players in the industry and creating fantastic opportunities for the students who study with us.

    The BTEC Higher National Certificate in Mechanical Engineering is the nationally recognised qualification that is highly prised by employers and provides in depth study of key aspects of Mechanical engineering and equips learners for progression within their chosen profession or for further study. Students will be assessed via vocationally relevant assignments and, in addition to classroom teaching, will be expected to develop skills in research and self directed study.

    The course is delivered on a part-time day release basis over two years. Year 1 on Mondays and Year 2 on Tuesdays.

    This course operates using a blended learning approach where part of some units may be delivered online via Microsoft Teams. To participate in this programme you will need a suitable computer and/or device with sufficient internet access. Specific requirements and information on the support available to borrow or purchase equipment can be discussed at interview.

  • Entry Requirements

    For students who have recently been in education, the entry profile is likely to include one of the following:

    • A grade and/or 9 in GCSE Maths (or equivalent) is strongly recommended.
    • A BTEC Level 3 qualification in Engineering
    • Other related Level 3 qualifications
    • An Access to Higher Education Diploma awarded by an approved further education institution
    • Related and relevant work experience in engineering over 5 years
    • An international equivalent of the above.

    If English is not your first language, a minimum IELTS 5.5 (or equivalent) is required.

    You should be familiar with basic computer functions and applications including Microsoft Windows and Office. Parts of your programme will be delivered using Microsoft Teams. Training for this application will be provided.

  • Qualification

    Pearson BTEC Higher National Certificate in Engineering (Mechanical Engineering)

    This qualification has been accredited by the Institution of Engineering Designers under licence from the UK regulator, the Engineering Council. Accreditation is a mark of assurance that the qualification meets the standards set by the Engineering Council in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC). An accredited qualification will provide you with some or all of the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills for eventual registration as an Engineering Technician (Eng Tech), Incorporated (Eng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng). Some employers recruit preferentially from accredited qualifications, ana an accredited qualification is likely to be recognised by other countries that are signatories to international accords.

  • Progression

    Upon completion of the course, you have the opportunity to progress to the Level 5 HND or Degree Apprenticeship.

  • Assessment

    You will be assessed continually throughout the course, normally via written assignments. Some assignments may be in the form of a test.

  • Home Study

    Additional study of four hours per week is required outside of classes.

  • Work Placement

    The course is aimed at those already in employment in the mechanical engineering industry, but such employment is not an essential requirement to benefit from the course. The course does not involve work placement.

  • Fees and Additional Costs

    The tuition fee for this programme is £3,500 per year. In addition to the tuition fee, an awarding body registration fee (set by the awarding body) and an annual student association fee of £15 are payable. At times, you may be offered the opportunity to visit exhibitions and shows, which may require additional entrance fees and travel costs.
