This professional qualification is for those working in, or wishing to work within, electrical and electronic or mechanica lengineering. It is a day-release course which provides a nationally-recognised qualification that offers career progression for those already in employment. The qualification provides a thorough grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required by the sector with national recognition by employers. The course is delivered on a day-release basis over two years.
At Level 4 students develop a broad knowledge and awareness of key aspects of the engineering sector through four core units , including one unit assessed by a Pearson-set assignment. The core units are:
Unit 1: Engineering Design Unit 2: Engineering Mathematics Unit 3: Engineering Science Unit 4: Managing a Professional Engineering Project
The Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Engineering offers students a broad introduction to the subject area via a mandatory core of learning, while allowing for the acquisition of some sector-specific skills and experience through the specialist units in electronic/mechanical pathway. This effectively builds underpinning core skills while preparing the student for more intense subject specialisation at Level 5.
Students will gain a wide range of sector knowledge tied to practical skills gained in research, self-study, directed study and workplace activities.
For students who have recently been in education, the entry profile is likely to include one of the following:
A to C grade and/or 9 to 4 in GCSE Maths (or equivalent) A BTEC Level 3 qualification in Engineering A GCE Advanced Level profile that demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject or adequate performance in more than one GCE subject. This profile is likely to be supported by GCSE grades at A to C and/or 9 to 4 (or equivalent)
An Access to Higher Education Certificate awarded by an approved further education institution Related work experience An international equivalent of the above.
Pearson BTEC Level4 Higher National Certificate in Engineering (General Engineering)
Students are assessed continually throughout the course, normally via written assignments. Some assignments may be in the form of a test.
An additional two to three hours a week is required for work outside of class.
The course is aimed at those already in employment in the electronics/mechanical industry, but such employment is not an essential requirement to benefit from the course. The course does not involve work placement.
Students may progress to an HND or further related study at a higher level.
Fees and Additional Costs
If you are over 18 there will be a registration fee of £220.00 if you have not previously registered with the exam board. There is a one-off cost to register with the examining body.
