Those who wish to work toward becoming a competent electrician and pursue a career in the electrotechnical/building services sector.
The certificate will suit students who want to learn the basics of electro-technical principles and practice. It allows students to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in the electro-technology sector. This is a qualification that tests both practical and knowledge-based skills in a realistic working environment.
The qualification covers topics which include:
This qualification comprises of knowledge and performance units which between them cover: health, safety and environmental considerations, organising and overseeing, terminating and connecting, inspection, testing and commissioning; fault diagnosis and rectification, electrical scientific principles, BS 7671; electrical design; and electrical maintenance.
Students will need level 2 Diploma in Electrical Installations. Four GCSE passes at grade 4 or above, preferably including Maths and English, or a vocational qualification at pass or above, and Functional Skills Maths and English at Level 2.
Ideally students would have completed a Level 2 electrical course and have undertaken a technical subject at school. Use of basic tools and some hand skills would be useful.
Diploma in Electrical Installations (Buildings and Structures) Level 3
The course is continuously assessed by both practical and written assignments and tests.
Students are expected to carry out some self study, typically six hours per week, and are expected to complete any work that has not been completed during lesson times.
There is an element of work experience within this qualification. The expectation is that students will fulfil a work placement if suitable.
Students can progress to higher education on successful completion.

Additional costs may be required for the industry specific text books. Details will be given at interview. Students are required to purchase safety boots to be worn during workshop based lessons. Additional Costs may also be incurred for exam resits.
