This apprenticeship develops assistant accountant skills including producing monthly management accounts, year- end financial statements and completing VAT returns.

Typical roles are Assistant Accountant, Assistant Accounting Technician.

It covers the development of skills in:

  • preparation of final accounts
  • understanding and maintenance of cost accounting records
  • preparation of reports and returns
  • development and maintenance of financial spreadsheets
  • understanding professional ethics
  • using accounting packages

Entry Requirements

Apprentices are required to have a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4/ C or above including Mathematics and English, or BTEC Level 2 Diploma at Merit, or NVQ Level 2 plus two Functional Skills at Level 2.


Apprentices will need to have some experience of working in Accountancy to allow them to meet the rigours of the programme.


Assistant Accountant Level 3 Apprenticeship


Apprentices are assessed on programme through developing a training log that is reviewed by their assessor. End point assessment includes the AAT Advanced Diploma in Accounting (Level 3) test and a portfolio of work and reflective discussion about a range of evidence produced in the work place.

Home Study

Apprentices will be required to meet target dates for completion of work set by their assessor throughout the programme; this will require some work to be completed in their own time.

Work Placement

Apprentices need to be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week, with an employer who is willing to support them through the apprenticeship. For those not currently in suitable employment, Newbury College can provide a list of current apprenticeship vacancies.


Achievement of this Apprenticeship could lead to progression onto the Higher Level Apprenticeship in Accounting.

Associate Membership of AAT is required.

Additional Information

Apprentices will spend time attending classes at the college, typically delivered one day or evening a week in term time.
