The programme aims to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the operations and structures of business and equips students with the skills required to succeed in employment or at university.

Students study a range of business-related topics including HR, marketing, finance and logistics, and learn about business through participating in special events - an exciting opportunity to demonstrate entrepreneurial skills and gain valuable work skills.

Students will be expected to take part in College activities, work experience and complete a skills project to build confidence and employability skills. It will cover subjects such as equality and safeguarding, which are designed to broaden knowledge of these subjects and help with employment potential.

The Foundation Diploma is delivered in one year, on successful completion of which students can continue onto the Extended Diploma. The Foundation Diploma provides an in depth look into the world of business and is equivalent to one A Level. Students who progress to the Extended Diploma will gain the equivalent of three A Levels.

Entry Requirements

Five GCSE passes at grade 4/C or above or an equivalent vocational qualification at merit grade (including GCSE or Functional Skills Level 2 Maths and English).

Students who have not yet achieved grade 4/C in GCSE Maths and English, will study Functional Skills or GCSE Maths and English as part of their course.

Mature students and those with previous experience will be considered on an individual basis. Students who do not meet the entry requirements are encouraged to speak to our Information, Advice and Guidance team about alternative provision at Level 2.


An interest in business practices and a desire to work towards a career in a business related context. Learners should have good research skills, regularly watch the news especially relating to business news,


BTEC National Foundation Diploma in Business
BTEC National Extended Diploma in Business


Students are assessed through a combination of assignments, practical work, projects and controlled assessments set by the awarding body. Students will produce a portfolio of work which is assessed against the grading criteria for the units. Assignments set will have an agreed hand in date that will need to be met in order to meet the awarding body guidelines. In addition to portfolio work, some units may also include externally marked assessment material, sat under controlled conditions.

Home Study

Students are expected to spend additional study hours in the Learning Resource Centre in order to successfully complete this programme. Students need to complete research and homework on a regular basis in order to build up knowledge and confidence in the world of business and retail. It is expected that students will spend approximately six hours a week on course work outside of normal class time.

Work Placement

During the course students will be expected to complete some work experience. This helps students understand the types of roles available in the industry and gain the skills required to work in the sector.


Successful students can progress to the Extended Diploma, then onto higher education courses, part-time professional courses, apprenticeships or into employment.

Fees and Additional Costs

From time to time there will be trips and the student will be expected to pay for additional transport and any other costs.
