The main purpose of the VTCT Level 1 Certificate in Hair and Beauty Skills (VRQ) is to enable students to develop hair and beauty skills, techniques and knowledge, which will prepare them for progression to the next level of vocational learning. All the units in this qualification directly prepare students for further study in the hair and beauty sector.
This qualification will enable students to develop the practical hair and beauty skills and techniques required to create a total look using colour; and select from a range of units including: hand and nail care, foot and toenail care, make-up application, skin care, nail art, blow-drying hair, plaiting hair, colouring hair using temporary colour.
Also included in the optional section of this qualification are units that support the students' practical work such as: the hair and beauty sector, hair and beauty products, health and safety, customer services and designing retail display areas.
Entry Level: Students will be required to attend an interview.
Level 1: Students will need to have four GCSE passes at grade 2 (E) or above, preferably including Maths and English. Alternatively, students will be accepted on to the course if they have an equivalent vocational qualification at an equivalent level to GCSE grades 2 (E), and Functional Skills Maths and English, preferably at Entry Level 3.
Enthusiasm, good communication skills and a willingness to learn.
VTCT Level 1 Certificate in Hair and Beauty Skills (VRQ)
Most of the qualification is practical based with some classroom work. Assessments are carried out through a combination of observation of practical work on peers/models, projects, assignments, and written and oral questioning. Students build a portfolio of evidence.
Four to six hours a week would be a requirement for home study work.
Work experience is a mandatory part of the course and it is advisable that students source their placement early in the qualification.
After completing this course, students can progress onto Level 1/2, Hair or Beauty to specialise in a preferred vocational area.

There will be a cost for a uniform. This price is available upon request from the Hairdressing department and will be discussed at interview.
