Overview

This qualification is an advanced (Level 3) technical qualification, which has been developed collaboratively with employers, professional associations and trade bodies to set the standard and content. It is suitable for all hairdressers wanting to expand their knowledge and creativity in this exciting industry.

All units are at advanced level including cutting, colouring and using straightening systems. All units have both a practical and theory element to ensure students can demonstrate a good understanding of each technique.

Running commercial clients in our salon ensures that students enhance their employability skills. Throughout this qualification, students develop their knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology and health and safety. They will also develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to consult with clients, provide a range of cutting and colouring services, and set, dress and finish the hair.

In parallel, students also develop their communication and customer service skills, awareness of environmental sustainability and commercial skills, all of which are valued highly by employers. Problem solving and research skills will also be developed.

Entry Requirements

Any student applying for the course must hold a current full level 2 qualification in Hairdressing with current skills and all treatments carried out in a professional environment. Students must also have five GCSE passes at grade 4 (D) or above, preferably including Maths and English or an equivalent vocational qualification at merit grade, and Functional Skills Maths and English, preferably at Level 2. Students must also be in relevant work-related employment.

Skills

Level 2 hairdressing or sufficient commercial experience is essential. It is an advantage to be comfortable working on the computer as all exams are online and all assignments.

Qualifications

VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Hairdressing

Assessment

Continuous assessment of practical skills will prepare students for graded assessments which are set throughout the year. A graded end-of-year practical synoptic exam and written exams are required to pass the qualification.

Home Study

Four to six hours a week is recommended to support the qualification. This will included revision for exams.

Work Placement

It is mandatory that you will complete 30 hours work experience along side this course. Ideally, working part-time in the industry would benefit skills and knowledge.

Progression

On successful completion of this qualification, students are fully qualified to work in hairdressing salons, as a technical consultant and on-board cruise liners. Students may wish to set up a self-employed business or work abroad.

Fees and Additional Costs

It is advisable that students purchase their own text book. A uniform is mandatory. Information for this will be given at interview. It is essential that students have scissors, razor and a basic hairdressing kit.
