This one-year course offers the opportunity to develop skills in Beauty Therapy. The course is divided into modules which range from Health and Safety to Manicures and Makeup and from Improving Facial Skin Condition to Providing Eyelash and Eyebrow Treatments and Waxing. Students work on each other to gain experience before working on paying clients. Leading manufacturers, suppliers and guest lecturers visit to give lectures.
Students learn a wide range of basic skills, firstly practising on each other, but quickly moving onto completing treatment on clients.
Students have the chance to go on external visits to different shows around the country and have guest speakers in to give practical and theory workshops.
There are practical and theory elements to the course and students have to produce a portfolio of evidence.
Students will need to have five GCSE passes at grade 3 or above, preferably including Maths and English. Alternatively, students will be accepted onto the course if they have an equivalent vocational qualification at merit grade, and Functional Skills Maths and English, preferably at Level1.
All students must have achieved, or show the ability to achieve, Maths and English to grade 3 or equivalent. Where a student has not yet fulfilled this requirement, a functional skills qualification is a mandatory part of this course.
Excellent attendance is required (100% expected, minimum 90% acceptable). Students must be prepared to study towards Functional Skills English and Maths. Students must have full dexterity, good eyesight (with or without contact lens, glasses or other). Students with disabilities will be assessed on an individual basis to confirm their suitability for the course
If English is not your first language you will need an IELTS score of 5.
VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Beauty Therapy
Observation of practical work on clients, projects, assignments and case studies, and written and oral questioning. Students also build a service portfolio of evidence and complete in year graded assessments and an end of year practical and theory exam.
Most of the homework can be completed in independent study, larger assignments will be given over holidays, Christmas and Easter breaks.
As well as the taught units the course includes mandatory work experience. Students are encouraged to source their own work experience early in the programme, as it contributes to future progression opportunities.
Progression is usually to Level 3 Beauty Therapy or if students choose to go into employment it could be as an apprentice, a cosmetic adviser within a department store, or in a salon performing basic beauty treatments, or a mobile Beauty Therapist.
Fees and Additional Costs
Students are expected to wear a uniform whilst carrying out practical activities in the salon. Cost of kit and uniform will discussed at interview.
Student attendance must remain above 90% to be successful on the course.
