Progress for University Centre Newbury

Plans to establish the University Centre Newbury (UCN) took a significant step forward with the recent granting of planning permission for the multi-million pound new development. The Centre will provide degrees and other higher level qualifications in the key sectors of digital technology, business & finance, engineering, health & social care and construction.
 
The first students of the University Centre will begin their studies in dedicated facilities within the College building in September 2020, before moving into the iconic new building once it is completed. Images of the new building at the front of the College campus show how the UCN will work as a key part of the learning campus for Newbury and West Berkshire. The original timescales for the completion of the building have been extended to focus on the development of the state-of-the-art digital facilities and achieve the demanding zero-carbon standard; constructing the first public building in West Berkshire to achieve this new level in sustainability.
 
 
College Principal, Iain Wolloff said:
 
‘We are delighted at the fantastic progress with establishing the Centre and look forward to welcoming the first UCN students in September 2020 to study in the dedicated space within the existing College facilities, before moving into the exciting new building. We have been amazed at the enormous support for the Centre from employers and organisations throughout the community and will launch a range of new degrees and other HE courses as planned’.

Aiming Higher at Newbury College

On Tuesday 25 June, engineering students studying at Higher National Certificate (HNC) and Higher National Diploma (HND) levels, presented their end of year projects to a panel of expert judges and dignitaries including the Mayor of Newbury, Cllr Elizabeth O’Keeffe, Cllr Graham Pask and Cllr Mike Cole. 
 
Almost 90 students, many of whom are in paid employment as higher-level apprentices, competed with their peers for the Best Project in their relevant categories. Students were able to gain vital feedback on their project design and development and practice their presentation skills throughout the exhibition. Many of the projects have been created for and applied to the businesses in which the students are employed.
 
Newbury College was delighted to welcome back former Degree student and IED award winner, George Collins, to speak about his journey into a career in Engineering, and introduce the awards.

Iain Wolloff, Principal and Chief Executive, Newbury College said, “We were particularly delighted to see the outstanding quality of the work on display. Our annual Engineering Exhibition is a fantastic model of our degree level programmes and sets the standard for the expansion of our higher-level provision with the development of University Centre Newbury (UCN).”

In an exclusive interview with the Newbury Weekly News, new Principal and CEO Iain Wolloff sets out a vision for the development of Newbury College.

During the interview, Iain talks about the future ambitions for the College that include opening a university centre to improve the higher education opportunities in Newbury and the surrounding areas. Newbury College already offers a Degree Apprenticeship in Engineering but would like to expand this offering to attract more degree-level students.

Today’s publication of the Higher Education funding Council’s (HEFCE) Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) awarded Newbury College its ‘Provisional Status’. The award is given to higher education providers that meet ‘rigorous national quality requirements but which do not yet have sufficient data to be fully assessed’.

In the autumn term of 2016, Newbury College submitted its Annual Provider Review to HEFCE and a review of this confirmed that the College ‘fully meets HEFCE’s requirements for quality and standards’. 

This means that:

  • Qualification standards are reliable and reasonably comparable to those across the UK
  • The student academic experience is of a high quality
  • Student outcomes are generally good or excellent and the provider has demonstrated continuous improvement in relation to them.

Newbury College continues to grow its higher education provision with programmes available in Art and Design, Business*, Engineering, Graphic Design, Health and Social Care*, Public Services and Sport.

Newbury College is excited to be developing a new B.Eng. (Hons) degree apprenticeship* with Buckinghamshire New University and is accepting enquiries from those interested in studying on this programme from September 2017. Call 01635 845000 for details.

Consumer group Which? has published survey results which suggest that further guidance is needed for students when deciding on what subjects to study after GCSEs.

The poll of 1,020 UK teenagers revealed that 30% felt inadequately informed about how their subject options would affect their university and degree courses, with 29% agreeing they would have appreciated more advice.

The survey also revealed that over half of the students polled picked their sixth form or college subjects without considering their future prospects.

“This, coupled with the news reported recently by The Guardian that one in four UK graduates remain low earners ten years after leaving university, makes it even more important for young people to consider what they want to do in the future and seek advice from a range of different sources prior to choosing what subjects to study after GCSEs,” commented Dr Anne Murdoch, Principal at Newbury College.

Which? also advises students to consider vocational qualifications as a route to university.

“The traditional route to university isn’t ‘one-size-fits all’,” continued Murdoch. “BTEC diplomas (HNCs and HNDs) and apprenticeships offer an alternative to higher education, and include practical experience relevant to the subject choice.”

Newbury College student, Bryony Petersen, recently completed BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Uniformed Public Services, and has a place at University of Northampton to study paramedic science in September. “The BTEC course taught me the self-discipline to develop leadership and teamwork skills, expedition training, command, control and much more. My results have earnt me a place at university in a subject that will ultimately lead to me to my dream career as a paramedic,” said Bryony.

Newbury College is holding an open enrolment event on Saturday 3 September between 10am to 1pm. Curriculum subject leaders will be on hand to discuss the various options available to students, who can also seek advice from members of the College’s Information, Advice and Guidance team.
