Inspired by a visit to the West Berkshire Museum, Foundation Diploma students studying Art & Design at Newbury College have developed a portfolio of work which has been commissioned by the Museum and transformed into an exhibition called ‘A Time and A Place’. The exhibition will be open at the Museum until 26 April 2020.
The students were delighted to have the rare opportunity to explore and handle the museum artefacts, under the expert supervision and direction of Clare Bromley, Learning & Participation Officer at West Berkshire Museum. Clare also visited the College to give the students feedback and guidance on the development of their artwork.
Clare Bromley, said “It has been wonderful to work with Newbury College staff and students on this project. The superb exhibition is a reflection of all their hard work. We hope that the exhibition will encourage new audiences to visit and in particular, the young people, their family and friends.”
The students have been preparing the displays through sampling and exploring a wide range of 2D and 3D materials, technique and processes including drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpting and Sarah Gordon, Art & Design Lecturer commented, “This opportunity has been invaluable for the students, giving them insight into the practicalities, constraints and creative potential of producing work for a client which is of a professional standard. The opportunity to display work in the public domain is integral to supporting their progression onto a career in the creative sector.”

You’ve been on Instagram and found out which Disney character you are, but what about your dream career? The current trend in online “head quizzes” has inspired us to create our own interactive, augmented reality, face filter for Instagram that randomly selects one of the many career pathways available to study at the College.
While the filter is just for fun, it forms part of the College’s recent change in direction, to focus more on careers, not courses, and aims to increase awareness of the wide range of employer-led programmes and apprenticeship opportunities we provide.
Marketing Officer and developer of the AR filter, Shaun Daubney, said: “We are always looking at new and innovative ways to engage with potential students. We want them to get excited about their future careers and know that we can support them in achieving their goals.”
The filter has already produced some surprising results for students and staff who have been testing it since it launched on Friday, with career predictions including accountant, beauty therapist, firefighter, personal trainer and web developer.

Former Newbury College Performing Arts student Nick Strong and his band mate Stephen Millyard are hoping for Christmas success with the launch of their new holiday hit “The Big Red Guy”.
The duo, who go by the band name Juliette, usually perform cover songs at local gigs but wrote The Big Red Guy a few years ago as part of a competition for former local radio station, Newbury Sound.
“I had this Christmas song for a couple of years, but never really did anything with it” said Nick, a former Newbury College student who now runs the popular Air Hair Co salon in Newbury town centre.
All of the money made from the sale of the single will go to Friends of PICU in Southampton, a charity that supports children and their families by providing vital equipment and services that are not always provided by the statutory authorities at the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Southampton University Hospital. The charity is close to Nick’s heart after they provided care for the son of a close friend and the band has previously raised about £70,000 for the cause.
“Every year we said ‘we will put it out this year’, but this year we said we’ll go for it with this charity in mind.”
The Big Red Guy was recorded by Sam Winfield and engineered by Tom Millar at Studio 91 and it features local singer songwriter Joe Hicks on guitar. The album can be downloaded on Spotify, iTunes and Amazon Music.

A-Level and GSCE Design and Technology students from Trinity School have been visiting Newbury College over the past few weeks to explore the exciting world of engineering.
The Engineering Workshops and Solutions Lab at Newbury College forms part of the development of the University Centre (UCN) which launches in September 2020 and will focus on inspiring new generations of engineers through higher education programmes and degrees.
Mr Carl Thompson, Design & Technology Technician (D&T), Trinity School, commented “This is an incredible opportunity for our students to see the choices of learning available to them. Hearing about current Newbury College students that are applying their learning while achieving their Degree for well known companies is really aspirational.”
Led by the College’s highly-skilled and experienced tutors, the Trinity students were enthralled and engaged in the exciting range of hands-on activities that form the practical basis of vocational education programmes. Proudly producing machined pieces and stamped nameplates, the students left Newbury College with more than just memories and aspirations for their future careers.
Lily Canning, Year 8 D&T Student, said “We learnt how to use the machines and there were lots of new and different things for us to see and learn. It was really fun!”
Newbury College has been providing engineering courses for over 70 years, including a wide range of apprenticeship programmes that support local employers to develop new talent and more recently a degree programme in partnership with Buckinghamshire New University. The College is working with its university partners, local employers and local schools to increase the career opportunities available in engineering and other subject areas through the launch of UCN (University Centre Newbury).

The Newbury College professional catering team are due to welcome 15 students from the Julius Wegeler School, Koblenz, Germany, for the week on the 4th November, to share experiences and dazzle dishes, as the Restaurant lunch service themes its menu to reflect the German inspiration on hand.
This is the third year that the school has visited, and the College will escort the visitors throughout the week. On Monday the group will visit Havant & South Downs College and then take a trip to Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth, Tuesday students will be exchanging experiences and ideas as they prep for Wednesday’s lunch service, which is already fully booked! Wednesday will be a shared day of cooking and hospitality. On Thursday the students will be escorted to The Vineyard for a perfectly British, afternoon tea.
Malcolm Baggot, Course Leader, Professional Catering, commented “This is a great opportunity for our students to experience working with chefs from other countries and preparing a themed menu with new and exciting ingredients. We are delighted to be able to support the Julius Wegeler School and look forward to the exchange visit.”
The Restaurant at Newbury College provides a lunch service on Wednesday and Friday between 12:30 – 1:30 during term time, throughout the year, allowing the professional catering students to hone their preparation, cooking and hospitality skills in a real working environment, overseen by Malcolm Baggot and Anthony Millon.
Newbury College is challenging the approach to full-time, further education with a ground-breaking new programme that facilitates a link between school and work by creating an environment for undecided students to discover their potential.
The Achieve Programme is part of the College’s “Careers, not courses” initiative, an evolution of their sixth-form provision that provides young people with a career-focused education. It has been designed and developed in partnership with local employers, and one of the first programmes of its kind to be launched in the country.
Students enrolling on the Achieve Programme are being given the opportunity to combine valuable qualifications with meaningful work placement and the added support of a college job coach to enable them to progress to an apprenticeship or career in their chosen field.
The new programme complements the college’s already comprehensive range of full-time study programmes that cover a variety of technical subjects from carpentry, plumbing, and electrical installation to child care, hairdressing and music technology.
Vice Principal, Lee Hunt MBE, said: “At Newbury College, we have been building some fantastic relationships with local employers to shape our curriculum offer. We are delighted that so many employers are supporting this innovative programme and can see the value that it can bring to their businesses and the young people who have taken this opportunity to improve their employment prospects with us.”
Enrolment for the 2019/2020 academic year has already started, but the College wants young people to know that it is not too late to enrol. Special advice and guidance clinics have been set up at the College’s Monks Lane campus to provide support for anyone who still undecided or unsure about their options.
Lead Careers Adviser, Karen Taylor, said: “Making a decision about what you are going to do in the future can be a daunting experience at any time, least of all when you still studying for your GCSEs. We appreciate that some young people may have been reconsidering their year 12 options over the summer holidays and we want them to know that it is not too late to change their minds. We are happy to meet with any young person to discuss their options and help them to decide on the right path to the career they want.”

Newbury College opened its doors to over a hundred young school leavers on Monday, providing a taste of college life and their future careers.
The annual event has become increasingly more popular, as the College embraces a new career-focussed curriculum, which is being led by local employers and aims to provide young people with the skills they need to succeed in their future employment.

The school leavers visiting this year’s event took part in a range of hands-on, career-related exercises, including graphic design workshops, electrical installation projects, performance car demonstrations from Think Ford and some innovative team building activities, before enjoying some fun in the summer sun with an inflatable bungee-run and a live performance by LongDayLateNight.
Newbury College has been laying the groundwork for the launch of new T Level qualifications, a mixture of classroom learning and ‘on-the-job’ experience that will be equivalent to 3 A Levels. These new qualifications will provide the knowledge and experience needed to open the door into skilled employment, further study or a higher apprenticeship.
While the official launch date for T Level qualifications is set for 2020, Newbury College is already making many of the changes ahead of time, allow students enrolling in September 2019 to benefit from studying a subject that is both engaging and worthwhile.

Newbury College beauty and hairdressing students have cast a spell on audiences at their annual showcase evening with fantastic creations straight out of the pages of their favourite bedtime stories.
Each student designed and created a look – including hair, makeup and clothing – based on their interpretation of the theme. From family-friendly Disney-inspired princesses to creepy creatures from the twisted world of Tim Burton classics, the students pushed the standard even higher this year as prosthetics and LED lighting were used to enhance the daring designs.
When the models took to the catwalk, in front of a panel of industry experts from commercial salons and leading companies in the sector, including Lilly Hennah from CJ Beauty & Co, Jason Palmer from Jason Palmer Hairdressing and Ailsa Willis from Diva Pro Styling, the audience was enchanted.
The judges had such a tough time in choosing winners that for the time, they even announced some highly commended entrants in the list of finalists. Highly commended students included Charlotte Canning, Christine Caldaralo and Holly Hoskins for their interpretations of Steve the Alien, Rapunzel and Jack and the Beanstalk.
Overall winner, Joana Camacho, made a splash with her interpretation of Serefina, a dark mermaid from Jennifer Donnelly’s Deep Blue, and was closely followed by runner up, Lauren Harris, whose Narnia inspired Ice Queen gave the audience chills.
Other finalists included Lucy Oliver with her hair-raising take on Snow White’s Maleficent and Lydia Leighfield, whose Thumbelina was a big hit. Theona (Tee) Walmsley was awarded Best Mood Board for her creative preparation and exploration of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden.
Rachael Elsey, Curriculum Manager for Services, said: “We’d like to thank everyone who came along to support the event, including all the friends, family members and judges. Our annual showcase event is designed to allow the students’ imagination to flourish, and they certainly didn’t disappoint! Some of the creations were truly amazing, and we are very proud of what they achieved.”
