Public Services

Security is the protection of people and property. The Armed Forces and police traditionally have been, and continue to be, major recruiters of security personnel. However, one of the biggest growth sectors has been in corporate and private security.
The main areas are:
The Armed Forces - the Army, Navy and Royal Air Force employ over 200,000 regular forces personnel in a variety of combat and support roles police and prisons - police officers are employed to prevent and detect crime; prison officers look after prisoners in custody fire and rescue - firefighters are employed by one of the 58 fire brigades in the UK as well as the British Airports Authority and the Defence Fire Service; coastguards work for the Maritime Coastguard Agency private security - individuals and organisations employ people as bodyguards, store detectives and security managers.
People who choose to work in security and the Armed Forces often do so because they thrive on challenge and variety. Although paperwork does feature, these are not conventional desk jobs and often involve a great deal of physical outdoor work.
Shift work and long hours are common, especially during operations or exercises. Jobs in this sector can be found across the whole of the UK, although recruits to the Armed Forces can be required to work anywhere in the world in combative or peacekeeping roles.
In the twenty-first century, security is a priority and there is a constant need for recruits to the Armed Forces. A particular growth area is private security. Not everyone in this sector is ex-service personnel; private security work provides growing opportunities for those without any military training.
Any security work needs disciplined people who communicate effectively, frequently in stressful or dangerous situations. Physical fitness is important and in some jobs is tested regularly. Leadership qualities are paramount and are strenuously tested during selection and training.
Career development is a key feature of most occupations within this sector, with organisations providing ongoing training.
