Motor Vehicle

A motor vehicle technician checks vehicles and repairs or replaces any faulty parts or equipment. They often specialise in repairing certain types, eg light or heavy vehicles, or motorbikes. Some also specialise in repairing its electronic equipment, known as a vehicles Electronic Control Unit (ECU). Many technicians carry out MOTs, if they work in a garage.
The working week is usually 40 hours long, with added time for shift work or weekend work. Some technicians may be involved in call-outs. Heavy vehicle workers may also work late at night.
A technician should demonstrate the following:
- good communication skills
- excellent knowledge of their field
- an ability to work quickly and methodically
- an enthusiasm for manual work.
Opportunities are available in smaller garages, with larger organisations such as the RAC and AA and well-known repair shops.
Older applicants are often welcomed due to the maturity and experience they can bring to the role. It is often advisable to move to different organisations to gain experience in the role. Promotion is usually from technician to senior technician and then to technical supervisor.
