Building Services Engineering makes buildings work. It is a specialist branch of engineering within the construction sector. Service and maintenance engineers play a key role in planning and completing a range of maintenance work. They also monitor and manage the operation of plant and equipment through building and energy management systems.

The broad purpose of the occupation is to plan and complete a variety of maintenance activities involving industrial and commercial building services engineering systems. They carry out scheduled preventative maintenance as well as any required remedial or corrective repairs. These engineers use building and energy management systems to monitor and manage the operation of plant and equipment.

In their daily work, an employee in this occupation interacts with clients, suppliers, site managers and other trades on site.

  • Description

    A building services and maintenance engineer will be responsible for health and safety appropriate to their scope of work. Along with experience gained in the workplace, this apprenticeship covers essential aspects such as fault finding, fault diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining systems, components, and equipment.

    A building services and maintenance engineer must stay updated on the latest industry standards and regulations to ensure compliance and keep the systems in line with current guidelines. Overall, their expertise and attention to detail contribute to the smooth operation and longevity of the systems they maintain. Maintenance engineers also play a crucial role in the overall efficiency and performance of the systems they oversee.

    An apprenticeship is a genuine job and under all circumstances an apprentice will be employed from day one. Apprenticeships combine practical training in a job with study.

  • Entry Requirements

    Apprenticeships are available to anyone over the age of 16, living in England and have no upper age limit. Any vacancies will clearly state what the entry requirements are for the job role being advertised. There will be different entry requirements depending on the company and role.

    A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade 4/C or above, including maths and English are recommended for this apprenticeship. Individuals without level 2 English and/or maths will need to achieve level 2 in Functional Skills prior to taking the end-point assessment.

    Candidates should have a willingness to learn independently and apply learning in their current workplace. Access to a computer and basic IT skills are essential to complete assignments and other elements of the programme.

    An ideal applicant with be organised with a keen interest in building and maintenance. Previous experience in the construction or building maintenance industry would be an advantage.

  • Assessment

    Through their apprenticeship, apprentices gain the technical knowledge, practical experience and wider skills they need for their job and career. Apprentices will have their skills, knowledge and behaviours evaluated at the end of their apprenticeship by taking an end-point assessment (EPA). This is known as synoptic assessment. Individuals without level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this level prior to taking the end-point assessment.

  • Home Study

    The apprentice is expected to study through a mix of learning in the workplace, formal off-the-job training and the opportunity to practise new skills in a real work environment. The time spent on off-the-job training should be a minimum of 6 hours a week and should be included as part of working hours. The employer must allow time to complete the apprenticeship within the working hours, however, some homework may be set by College Tutors or Development Coaches.

  • Work Placement

    This is a work-based programme and is studied as part of an apprenticeship.

  • Fees and Additional Costs

    Employers are responsible for arranging the funding to cover their apprentice's training cost. Depending on an employers situation, training can be covered by either the Levy or supported by the Government.

    Apprentices must be aged 16+ and employed in a suitable position to fulfil the apprenticeship's knowledge, skills and behaviours requirements.
