Drawing & Painting

Overview

Develop your skills in drawing and painting. Work from natural materials or photographs, using the media of your choice. Suitable for learners of all levels and abilities. Learners need to bring the following to the first class: Essential - a 2B pencil, some cartridge paper (at least A3 size) and a rubber. Optional - learners may bring watercolour paints, watercolour paper, brushes and other drawing/painting medium learners may wish to use. Learners will be advised about the purchase of additional art materials during the course.

Learners will develop their drawing skills and experiment with a variety of watercolour techniques whilst studying still life objects, landscapes and portraits.
Term A: Learners will be advised about the purchase of art materials and equipment. Learners will have the opportunity to experiment with pencil, charcoal, water-soluble pencils and pastels. Towards the end of this term learners will be taught how to stretch paper, basic colour mixing and how to lay flat washes.

Still life objects and landscapes will be studied during this term.
Term B: Learners will be taught a variety of watercolour techniques this term including gradated washes, wet on dry, wet on wet, masking areas, lifting out colour, dry brush, toothbrush spatter, paintbrush spatter and salt spatter. This term learners will study from still life objects, portraits and landscapes.
Term C: Topics covered this term will include the art of sketching, the techniques of pen and ink, brush and ink, and watercolour combined with pen and ink. Subjects such as animals, birds and landscapes will be covered.
Term D: Learners will study the art of sketching, still life objects and landscapes. Painting landscapes in watercolour, acrylics and pastels will also be covered. Weather permitting, some outdoor sketching may be possible.

*PLEASE NOTE- The running of this course is subject to receiving sufficient enrolment numbers. Newbury College reserve the right to close, cancel or postpone a course if it has not received the minimum required enrolment number by the scheduled start date. In the case of cancellation, enrolled learners will be notified 3 days prior to the start of the course and are entitled to claim for a full refund of their course fees.

Progression

Learners can progress to other art (especially watercolour) courses and also qualification courses.

Assessment

Progress on this course will be tested through observation, presentation and lecturer feedback.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Qualifications

This course does not lead to a formal qualification.

Home Study

Homework is not essential but learners will benefit from undertaking home study of less than 1 hour per week.

Skills

Work Placement

Learners do not need to be in relevant work to undertake this course.

Additional Costs

Learners will be required to provide their own art materials. There may be a charge for the use of a life model on this course.
