Basic Plumbing
Overview
The aim of this course is to provide learners with an elementary understanding of domestic plumbing systems and sufficient skills to undertake basic plumbing operations around their home. Suitable for complete beginners. Learners need to bring the following to the first class: writing materials, old clothes.The aim of the course is to provide learners with an elementary understanding of domestic plumbing systems and sufficient skills to undertake basic plumbing operations around their home.
The course will be divided equally into practical lessons to develop skills and classroom work to develop understanding of plumbing systems. There will be one lesson allocated to the learners' own projects towards the end of the course where they can plan a new installation, plan modification of existing plumbing or bring in components for repair.
The course will cover the following:
-Introduction Safety, Legislation, Water Regulations, Byelaws, sources of information,
- Underpinning knowledge Pressure, flow, temperature, materials, corrosion and plumbing tools,
- Practical work on tap, valve & cistern repairs,
- Understanding cold and hot water systems.
- Practical work on copper pipe bending, soldering and use of compression fittings,
- Practical work on compression fittings, plastic pipe and push-fit fittings,
- Practical work on waste pipe and fittings,
- Understanding heating systems and showers,
- Learners own project; Electrical work and safety. End of course quiz.
*PLEASE NOTE- The running of this course is subject to receiving sufficient enrolment numbers. Newbury College reserve the right to close, cancel or postpone a course if it has not received the minimum required enrolment number by the scheduled start date. In the case of cancellation, enrolled learners will be notified 3 days prior to the start of the course and are entitled to claim for a full refund of their course fees.
Progression
Learners may progress to other non- qualification/ leisure courses in; construction, D.I.Y, Bricklaying etc, or learners may choose to progress on qualification/ accredited courses in Plumbing.Assessment
Progress on this course will be tested through observation, presentation and lecturer feedback.Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements for this course.Qualifications
This course does not lead to a formal qualification. This course is designed as a basic leisure course for anyone wishing to carry out D.I.Y tasks around their own homes and will not qualify learners as plumbers.Home Study
Homework is not essential but learners will benefit from undertaking home study of approximately 1 hour per week.Skills
Work Placement
Learners do not need to be in relevant work to undertake this course.Additional Costs
