The course will offer a pleasant progression through various techniques, approaches and styles in a 'hands on' manner with lots of help, examples, demonstrations, ideas and much enthusiastic support. Learners may start in any term with 'one to one' help to get them started.
Term A: Learners will receive an introduction to painting still life and 'en plein air' (weather permitting). They will learn how to prepare a painting surface and how to mix a neutral colour for sketching. Use of the three primaries for mixing, blending and drawing with the brush. More experienced, and previous terms' learners, will progress, as they feel able to, with more varied work.
Term B: A mix of subjects to cater for different abilities with the opportunity to build upon knowledge gained in Term A. Painting with the knife, use of impasto and scraping out will be explored. An introduction to scumbling and lazing will be offered.
Term C: Painting outside when possible. Skies, fields, woods and paths. Use of tone sketching in neutral colours, with different ways of using the brush to provide texture. Imaginative landscapes based upon still life set-ups will give opportunities for learners to use a variety of techniques suited to their style.
Term D: Painting outside in a nearby field and wood may be used (weather permitting) to explore the effects of drawing and shading with the brush; blending wet in wet, and scraping and rubbing out over toned grounds. Similar work will be carried out on still life set-ups indoors.
Lecturer uses the spiral curriculum model and tailors the approach and techniques to suit learners ability, progress, age etc. Learners work at their own pace and topics are arranged to enable beginner and intermediate alike to have the maximum opportunity to achieve.
